1. Chemical Brothers – Lost in the K hole
The choice track from Dig Your Own Hole, and something I only really discovered after a few listens, because it’s laid back vibe is juxtaposed with all the obvious big bangers on there! The Chems have always held a special place in my heart, they were my first electronic music loves.
2. Ralph Myerz and the Jack Herron band – Think Twice
Saw these chaps at Glasto in 2004 – they were first on the main stage. Was blown away with their live show, again, I was just getting into electronic music at this time. Bought this album immediately and there isn’t a bad track on there!
3. Sebastian Tellier – Kilometer (Aeroplane remix)
This has been a staple in our sets for a good while now. We just love the synth work in this, and it’s probably one of the first tracks we put in the bag that had that low slung chuggy tempo compared with the other house music we had. For some reason the drop makes us think of Greensleeves!
4. Holy Ghost! – Hold On
We used to rinse DFA tunes in our sets! When we came across this tune, we loved the mix of electronics and band vibes – it could fit into a club set or be listened to at home – and it’s something we try and get across in our own music. Holy Ghost are also big analog heads… men after our own hearts!
5. Krafty Kuts – Ill Type Sound
Before we were disco heads, we were b-boys (sort of). Our first love was breakbeat… there I said it! Anything with a broken beat, dnb, breaks, hip-hop, we only seriously got into 4 to the floor stuff laters on. You just can’t fail to love the funk of this track, some might consider it cheesy, but sod ’em, this is straight up fun. Not so much now, but when we were cutting our teeth with residencies around Manchester, this was a regular party starter.
6. Chic – I Want Your Love (Todd Terje edit)
Nile Rogers is a big influence and hero for both of us. Personally, I’ve got more in to this sort of stuff as I get older – I’m less into though provoking, chin-stroky-for-the-sake-of-it music, and more into simple, happy, melodically pleasing tunage, of which Chic is the epitome. That being said, the origins of disco has it’s dark side, but I love that the music itself on a superficial level shows no sign of this – a turn the other cheek 2 fingers up to the establishment!
7. 2 Billion Beats – Noise In Your Eye
One of our own which has gone down a treat whenever we’ve snuck it in to a set. Based around a beaut of a sample from an old Jan Hammer record, hope you like it!
8. Moodymann – I’m Doing Fine
This is the record which promoted the birth of 2 Billion Beats! On our first track ‘The Moodymann’ we tried to mirror some of the incredible drum shuffle in this track. Just love the schizophrenic nature of Moodymann’s stuff.
9. Neurotic Drum Band – Robotic Hypnotic Adventure
First heard this on one of our best mate’s stag do in Munich, very good memories! Sometimes you just need straight up simple strong chords played on a piano. Does the business time and time again in our sets.
10. Lindstrom – The Contemporary Fix
This used to be a favourite at the long-running and much loved night, Aficionados in Manchester. Also great memories cruising round with this on, on the way to gigs and practices. It’s totally ridiculous, almost like a shared joke between Col and I. On th odd occasion where we’re playing somewhere suitable to drop it, 1/2 the room love it and the other half don’t know what the hell just happened.
11. Salt City Orchestra – Theme From Salt City Orchestra
Before we signed music to Paper, we were big fans anyway – this is one of our choice cuts from the early days before they re-invented themselves in the late 2010’s. Big basement house tune with an irresistible numb square bass, never get tired of this one.
12. Still Going – Still Going Theme
This is one of the first pieces of vinyl we bought together.. aww! Another completed hammered track from our various slots around Manchester, just lovely laid back vibes.
13. Coldcut & Hexstatic – Timber
Personally one of my favourite and formative festival tunes. Used to rinse the Big Chill before it went downhill, and Ninja Tune always had a big contingent there – these 2 would put on an incredible AV set most years. Still don’t think enough electronic artists fully make use of the visual aspect, it always adds 50% enjoyment on for me.
14. LCD Sounsystem – Time To Get Away
Both big fans of LCD and how they transcends genres/age brackets. Again, we used to rinse this album cruising to gigs and practices before 2BB were alive.
15. Kraak & Smaak – Mad As Hell
Another staple from our sets, a proper party tune. Kraak and Smaak are just great producers, cramming lots of soul into their production in a way that is often overlooked by producers these days.
16. 2 Billion Beats – The Moodymann
Our first track released in 2011. Hope you like!
17. Womack & Womack – Teardrops
Our first regular gig together was an 80s night which Col got me on board with to break the weekly monotony. I hated it at first, but actually it became pretty much our biggest influence. It was such an exciting time in music: synthesis was developing, alongside different production techniques, and new genres of music!

What was the first record you bought that made you realise that you wanted to be a DJ / Producer?
Without meaning to sound twatty, I think we’ve always wanted to be involved in music in one capacity or another. Personally for me, it was Chemical Brothers and Leftfield albums from the late 90s which first sparked my interest in electronic music.
What record makes you most nostalgic?
Difficult! Most of the tracks from our mix take me back to some point or other in a nostalgic way What is your favourite end of night record?
End of night record would have to be some cheese ball edit or other – possibly the Dimitri from Stoke edit of Prince “I wanna be your lover” or similar!
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
Probably the Bladerunner soundtrack!
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
Probably something like DJ Shadow – Entroducing, I can listen to that on loop indefinitely.
Tomorrow (25 July 2014) sees the launch of ‘With a Twist’ Volume 1 on Handshakes Records. The album features our Cookie-Dough edit of the 1977 Latin disco-groover ‘Coconut Groove’ by Rice and Bean Orchestra.

Episode 7 of Cookie-Dough Radio Podcast with Ste & Terser
Part 1 – Eclectic / Alternative
We get things rolling with Joe Cocker’s heavily sampled track ‘Woman to Woman’, which has featured on various 80s and 90s hip hop tracks and in Grand Theft Auto. This powerful bass driven funk / blues track sets the scene as we groove through the next two tracks ‘Love (Your Pain Goes Deep – Apple Scruffs Edit)’ by Frankie Beverly and a cover of the Bill Withers classic by Madelaine ‘Who is She and What is She to You’. We finish the section in style with the sublime jazz infused track ‘Day Like This’ by legendary Detroit producer Theo Parrish and the Master Drummer of Afrobeat Tony Allen.
This Afrobeat inspired track leaves a rhythmic percussive echo that can be felt in section 2, as we mix and serve up beats and rhythms in 16 bar measures. With flavours from Heswall, the Wirral to Long Island, New York, we will have you foot tapping, head nodding and reminiscing all at the same time as we spin classic hip-hop from De La Soul and Jazzy Jeff along with Henry Greenwood’s re-work of ‘Buffalo Stance’ by Neneh Cherry.
Section 3 is a jamboree of sounds, as we pick up the pace with the deep and raw funk of Preston Love’s‘Cissy Popcorn’, moodily boogieing our way through to some shifted snares and breakbeats, as we end the eclectic half of the show with Tom & Jerry’s (4Hero to some of our younger listeners) jungle banger ‘Maximum Style’ and Calibre’s quality liquid funk rework of ‘Refusal’ by Zero T.
We take you back to 1987 in Section 3 with the legendary Trax Records Chicago house anthem ‘Baby Wants to Ride’ by the ‘Godfather of House’ Frankie Knuckles. Following that we slip in some filth from the brand new eagerly awaited self-named Moodymann album ‘Kenny Dixon Jnr’. As always we finish the show on a ‘Cookie-Dough Classic’ and this time we go back to Chicago, 1986 with the house music classic ‘Love Can’t Turn Around’ by Farley ‘Jackmaster’ Funk feat. Daryl Pandy.

Well I can honestly say that I enjoyed putting this selection together so much, thank you guys for asking me…although I have to say, it gave me a few problems to start with, I had SO many tracks that I wanted to include that the biggest task really was trying to whittle it down into some sort of cohesive hour or so…which I’m not sure I’ve achieved…I suppose I’ll find out from you lot though!!
Seriously though, every piece of music on here has a special memory, reminds me of a particular time, a particular person or situation. I would say I’ve been influenced by these very strongly indeed.

Jean Michel Jarre – Equinox 1: First album I ever bought, this track is all about the textures and hints at the space theme, which I’m still quite geeky about and obsessed with!
Tubeway Army – Are Friends Electric: Probably my all time favourite track. Unbeatable.
Chemical Brothers – Chico’s Groove: Huge admiration for the Chemical Brothers and all they have done for electronic music, this track reminds me a lot of a mad house I lived in with a bunch of very dear friends and fellow band members!
Penguin Cafe Orchestra – Music for a found Harmonium: This was on a Cafe Del Mar Album that we used to play on repeat, Smokebelch was on the same album. Love the quirkiness of this.
Talk Talk – Life’s What You Make It: Majestic, monumental, inspiring…Pure love for this song.
Ian Dury and the Blockheads – Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick: Truly believe that Ian Dury was a musical genius and there’s just so much to appreciate in this track…the lyrics, the piano…but most of all on this track, listen to the bass sing in the verses…sublime!
Talking Heads – Slippery People: This track is just so fucking cool, Talking Heads at their best!
Tom Browne – Funkin For Jamaica: All about the bassline..
Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock – It takes Two: As soon as you hear that sample it makes you want to dance..!
Leftfield – Release The Pressure; Leftism is one of those albums that just doesn’t date, was lucky enough to see Leftfield live on a recent tour…the bass they delivered was earth shattering!
LCD Soundsystem – Someone Great: I love pretty much everything that LCD have done, this track is probably my favourite though…the main sequence is so infectious.
St.Etienne – People Get Real: I rediscovered this recently and remembered hearing it years ago and falling in love with it…
Talking Heads – Once In A Lifetime: Every now and then, I battle with myself over which is my all time number 1 track…Are Friends Electric usually just pips this..but its damn close!
Grandmaster Flash – White Lines: Just an awesome piece of music, I remember my sister buying this for me on vinyl this and The Message got played to death!
Afrika Bambaataa – Planet Rock/Gary Numan – Cars: The quintessential Electro track meets another favourite of mine Cars. I like mixing these two together.
Mental Cube – Q: An absolute killer of a tune, Future Sound of London in the Mental Cube guise.
Hardfloor – Acperience: Pure energy!!!!
A Guy Called Gerald – Voodoo Ray: Can play this anywhere on any night and you will get a great reaction, hands down acid classic!
Donna Summer – I Feel Love: Totally ground-breaking. Another killer.
Kraftwerk – Tour de France/Stanton Warriors – Knowhow remix: Both tracks are just pure class, love playing about mixing these together.
Excerpt from Bladerunner: Another film that gets me every time, first record I ever put out on Cleveland City was called Tears in the Rain and we sampled this very section…only fitting that I should end this mix with it really!

There were a number records that made me want to be a producer but 3 stand out…Jean Michel Jarre – Equinox, Ultravox – Vienna but most of all Tubeway Army – Replicas. I was absolutely fascinated with Synths when I was a kid….still am!
What record makes you most nostalgic?
I get nostalgic when I listen to loads of stuff..my family were all into different kinds of music when I was growing up so my brother would have loads of reggae like Dave & Ansell Collins – Double Barrel and Sex Pistols/Clash etc, my sister would play lots of Bowie and Bob Marley – Exodus, My other Sis would be playing Led Zep and Black Sabbath…my other brother Talking Heads and Waterboys, huge mix of different music always being played..
What is your favourite end of night record?
It all depends on what type of night I’m playing at but Frankie Knuckles (Jamie Principle) – Your Love always a winner.
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
I got shitloads of guilty pleasure records…you cant beat a bit of Pussycat – Mississipi….. Hehe!!
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
I’ve still got my original vinyl album of Replicas…I know every single pop and crackle on that album. I was lucky enough to meet Gary Numan a few months back and managed to get him to sign a double 7” for me, so that’s well up there now too!

Q&A What was the first record you bought that made you realise that you wanted to be a DJ?
I don’t think there was ever one specific record that made me want to DJ / Produce music. The first music i really got into was jungle / drum and bass. I used to listen to a lot of mixes by LTJ Bukem and it was from listening to them mixes i knew that’s what i wanted to do.
What record makes you most nostalgic?
Again its probably something from an LTJ Bukem mix tape like ”Seba and Lotek – Sonic winds”. That track always make me feel nostalgic as it was on one of the first mixes i got. I could list another 100 more. I still listen to some of them mixes now from time to time and they always bring back great memories.
What is your favourite end of night record?
Back to the present now. “Waldemar schwartz – la taza de oro” A wonderful happy piece of music to end the night with.
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
I don’t think i own a guilty pleasure record but i do have a few that i could list. Kevin Little – turn me on. This was on the radio a few days ago, That’s why its came to mind. Not because its on my playlist or anything..
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
I really don’t think i have one, pretty boring but each and every record in my collection means a lot to me.
The smooth, deep and soulful hip-hop sounds of ‘UMI Says’ by Brooklyn’s Mos Def take you in the final section of the alternative mix. Crossing ‘the Pond’ but keeping it hip-hop we supply a masterclass in the art of rhyme with ‘Slicker than Average’ by Manchester 9 piece The Mouse Outfit. Wrapping things up we take you to the dancehalls of Jamaica with ‘Bandelero’ by Pinchers and ‘Interface’ by the ‘Dub-Master’ himself Prince Jammy.
Part 2 – House Mix
The house section gets going with two ‘beat down’ joints from producers of the moment, Melbourne Deepcast head honcho Andy Hart and German producer Max Graef. The warm chords and bumping beats of ‘Dem Young Jabronis’ sets the scene and ass shaking fidgety grooves ‘Jungle’ keeps things rolling along nicely. The section finishes off some smooth deep house from Japanese producer Kez YM with a track called ‘Late Night Remedy’.

I was happy to be asked by the guys from CookieDoughMusic, Terser & Ste, to do a mix for them with music that has influenced and moved me over the years- and that music from any genre could be included & used. This gave me the opportunity to create a really diverse and all-around mix with songs I love and adore.
So much music have influenced me in all kind of genres throughout the years, so it was difficult to choose which songs & what genres to include in the mix and still keep it to around 90 minutes, I wanted to include some of my favorite house tunes (I am a house head as well) and some more disco, but I had to omit them because of the time limit! But these songs & gems are some that has really influenced and moved me over the years and in my childhood and teen years.
In this 90 min long mix you will hear everything from Rock to Pop to Italo to Funk & Disco to Slow-burners, Synth-Pop and monster classics. Scroll down to see tracklist.

1] INXS – Suicide Blonde..: Starting out with this major ass-kicking hit song by Australian rockers INXS. My parents played INXS a lot when I was a child, my mom had all their albums and this is one of my absolute favorite songs by this group, RAW energy!!! This is my own personal extended DJ edit.
2] Yello – The Race..: Yello has as well been played a lot by my parents all the way through my childhood, especially by my father. I decided to include “The Race” from 1988. This track is nothing but FIRE, from the amazing synths, the deep drums to his evil dark voice!!! Again is this my own DJ edit.
3] Prince – Let’s Go Crazy..: One of my favorites by Prince, he opened Orange Stage with this song when I saw his concert at Roskilde festival in 2010. He is one of the most diverse artists ever, countless albums and countless genres. Personal extended edit.
4] Michael Jackson – I Want You Back..: This song just makes me feel good. My personal favorite from The Jackson 5 before Michael went solo in 71.
5] The Commodores – Nightshift..: My parents used to play this a lot while I grew up so the song has a special place in my heart. I’ve always loved the original song released in 85, but to have it remade in Michael Jackson’s memory in this 2010 version, it is truly amazing..!
6] UB40 – Red Red Wine..: Have been chillin’ and relaxing a lot to this great summer tune on my holidays…
7] Starship – Nothings Gonna Stop Us Now..: “Lookin’ in your eyes, I see a paradise”… Amazing 80s love song with some sweet synths! My own dj cut. Removed the part where she screams out the chorus.
8] Wang Chung – Dance Hall Days..: What to say! Great Great Great…
9] Des’Ree – Life..: I was a child in the 90s and remember watching the music video of this on MTV all the time: And the lyrics “Life indeed can be fun, If you really want to, Sometimes living out your dreams, Ain’t as easy as it seems”! This song is just about enjoying the simple things in life….
10] The Jones Girls – You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else..: Legendary ladies… The guitar & bassline in this is just ABSOLUTE! Drops this one often in my DJ sets!
11] Laura Branigan – Self Control..: Laura’s cover version of the original by RAF from 84, I love both versions in different ways. My own extended dj cut!
12] Scotch – Delirio Mind..: It should not be any surprise for you who know- or follow me that I have a love for Italo Disco, and this track was one of the first Italo songs I got introduced to. A true masterpiece… This is the 12” version!
13] Diana Ross – Im Coming Out..: A really happy disco tune, with a catchy horn line and a superb rhythm electric guitar, chose this because my mom used to play the 12”. Diana thought that “I’m Coming Out” was a song about her leaving Motown Records but Nile Rodgers says he had to lie to the singer. Nile Rodgers got the idea for “I’m Coming Out” after noticing three different drag queens dressed as Diana Ross at a New York nightclub called the GG Barnum Room.
14] Sophie Ellis Bextor – Murder on the Dancefloor..: This song could’ve been written in any of the past 3 decades, and that’s part of its charm in my opinion. A really great disco infected pop song, and I love this chilled out balearic mix!
15] Modern Talking – You’re My Heart, You’re My soul..: A cheesy love- but yet outstanding classic synthpop tune… My own extended DJ edit (find it on my soundcloud for a free download)…
16] Koto – Visitors..: I got introduced to this Italo monster tune by my Italo friend & record collector Jeff. This song is just Badass. This is the typically Italo disco sound for the Italo that was released between 1981-1984! Some of those special synths sounds were never made again…
17] Tom Jones – Sex Bomb..: This is just a pumping, hollering groove and I love this remix!
18] Janet Jackson – Together Again..: I have some really good memories attached to this song I was 8 years when this came out. “Together again” still has the power to put a smile on my face, and I don’t think that will ever change…
19] Earth, Wind & Fire – September..: This was one of the very first Disco songs I ever heard.
20] Yazoo – Don’t Go..: Another quality 80s jam with an incredible huge powerful voice and synths pads. Had a difficult time deciding to include this or “Situation”, both classics, but chose this one as it was the first one I heard from Yazoo. The 80s was with no doubt the best musical decade ever.
21] New Order – Blue Monday..: Just a stunning explosion of drum machines & wibbly synths. This is the 1988′ mix…

What was the first record you bought that made you realise that you wanted to be a DJ?
Actually it was not a purchasement of a record that made me realise I wanted to be a DJ or do edits. I was almost, thanks to my parents, born with a pair of headphones in my ears & always had a huge passion & addiction for music, and this encouraged me to be a DJ.
What record makes you most nostalgic?
It must be “Sort Sol – Glamourpuss”. On that album there’s a song called “Let your fingers do the walking”, it gives me the chills every time I listen that song, so many childhood memories attached to this. – this song is as well the soundtrack for a great Danish horror/thriller movie from 94 called “Nattevagten”…
What is your favourite end of night record?
That depends on the night and event…
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
I really don’t have any guilty pleasures. I stand by all the bands, songs & artists that I listen to, even if it’s a weird, funny italo tune, or a great Country song by Brad Paisley.
If you like the song, you like the song, don’t care what everyone else thinks…
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
Despite all my rare funk, disco & Italo records it still must be “Michael Jackson – Thriller”. I am a die-hard Michael Jackson fan and this was as well one of the very first records I bought!

1. The Temptations – Plastic Man (ADN Ruff Cut) [Dylan]
Just the sort of soul music that brought us into the world of Disco. Norman Whitfield, man!
2. John Ozila – Funky Boogie [John]
A song that proved to us we could make people dance, even with songs our crowd didn’t necessarily know. Also got us hooked on searching out more World music. Just found out today that he played drums with Black Soul as Jean Tamegnon.
3. George Smallwood – Lady Disco [John]
One of the first mellow Disco songs I could groove to. I’m a bit of a crazy dancer and I like my music fast, but Mr. Smallwood has proven I can take it slow – it just has to be brilliant.
4. The Equals – Black Skin Blue Eyed Boys [Dylan]
We probably have gotten more dance floor mileage out of “Funky Like a Train”, but this song’s message echoed a lot of the two-tone stuff I always dug, and this is an influences mix after all.
5. First Choice – Double Cross (Eli Escobar Disco Mix) [John]
Proto-house, Disco, funk, jazz. This song leads you down so many roads. EE’s got a fresh take and a great one at that.
6. The Style Council – Promised Land (Drop Out Orchestra Remix) [Dylan]
Is the Joe Smooth version better? Probably. Paul Weller was my idol, for a long time. Such a gifted songwriter from such a young age, and I always respected the evolution of his sound. His “ever changing moods”, one might say.
7. Hugh Masakela – Don’t Go Lose It Baby (stretch mix) [John]
The build in this is tremendous. 6 minutes of tension. Exhilarating. This song taught me to be patient. Good times come to deejays who wait.
8. Midnight Magic – Beam Me Up (ADN Extended) [Dylan]
A song that give us hope for reaching modern audiences with Disco music. We took the name of our monthly classic Disco party with Cyclist from it, and we’ve been lucky enough to host Al Kent, Kon, Tim Zawada, Rob Ouimet, Psychemagik, Apt One and Dave Allison at it.
9. Nightlife Unlimited – Peaches & Prunes (Ron Hardy Edit) [John]
I fancy myself a strange deejay, but Ron Hardy is so strange that I find most of his edits unplayable. Maybe I’ll grow into them. I think his oddness and his cult following are a real testament to how wonderful of a deejay he must have been. This edit I understand fully, and love. What a killer. He really boosts my confidence that crazy can reach the masses, along with guys like Harvey, of course.
10. Bad Manners – What The Papers Say (ADN Dub Edit) [Dylan]
A little nod to the punk/ska/new wave leanings of my youth. Underplayed and under appreciated tune from Buster and the gang. Had the pleasure of meeting him for a short interview, a few years back. Despite his being an Arsenal supporter, we got on well!
11. Wax – Rock & Stomp (ADN Edit) [John]
We are huge Al Kent fans. He has brought Disco to a new level. This is Dylan’s edit that made Al Kent’s ears perk up when he heard it at our party with him. It was just at soundcheck, but I saw a twinkle in his eye, haha. It’s an edit that gave us confidence that we can hang with the big boys.
12. Paul McCartney & Wings – Coming Up [Dylan]
My Dad is Beatles-mad, so I heard a lot of Macca growing up. I actually think, borderline blasphemy here, that I dig Paul’s work with Wings more than I do the Beatles, but that’s just cos I’ve likely overplayed them growing up. Paul doin’ a bit of Left Field Disco here, and pulling it off with aplomb!
13. The People’s Workshop – Funkathone (Al Kent Re-Edit) [John]
My personal favourite off the Disco Demands series. Al Kent changed the way we viewed Disco. He takes a lot from his extensive knowledge of the soul/jazz/funk scene and makes it his own. It has opened our eyes to the unbelievable breadth of Disco. This one is unbelievable. I could play it 10,000 times and I wouldn’t can it.
14. The Beach Boys – Here Comes The Night (ADN Dub Edit) [Dylan]
I think my first over concert was the Beach Boys, though by then they were overpaid and overfed, with no real chemistry amongst them. I’m sure I enjoyed it, mind you, I was only about five years old. The Beach Boys were the first band that I truly adored, and I’ll always listen to them. I worked on this edit just so I could slip some of their music into our Disco parties.

What was the first record you bought that made you realize that you wanted to be a DJ?
Dylan: It’s hard to pinpoint an exact album, but I listened to a lot of Beach Boys, the Jam and the Clash, growing up – Surfer Girl, All Mod Cons and Give ‘Em Enough Rope, respectively. The first song that made me want to DJ could have been Brother Jack McDuff’s – Hot Barbeque; a mod groover that George Benson played on. I knew it was the sort of tune that I’d have to play out myself, if I wanted to dance to it. Should have stuck in this mix! Was too difficult to narrow things down.
John: It was a download, to be honest. The Rolling Stones Top 500 Songs of All-Time. It opened my eyes to the fact that brilliant music existed beyond hip-hop and I had to do my best to let the world know.
What record makes you most nostalgic?
Dylan: Anything by Chet Baker. His vocal tracks are the ideal soundtrack for melancholic meandering.
John: Hey Jude by the Beatles. My grade three teacher played it for us on the tape deck as an educational tool to what music could be and why it was important. I think she dimmed the lights. It blew my 8 year old mind to bits.
What is your favourite end of night record?
Dylan: I end up playing “The Love I Lost” by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, more often that most people would surely care to hear it! I love playing the last song. John and I always fight over it.
John: “O Descobridor Dos Sete Mares” by Tim Maia. It’s blazingly fast, but sums everything up quite nicely near the end. I love seeing people go nuts right til the lights turn on.
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
Dylan: I’m a bit of a music snob, though I’m sure the Dolly Parton in my collection speaks against that statement. Disco music in general is something of a guilty pleasure, by most accounts, though my conscience is clear!
John: Also a huge Dolly Parton fan. Recently fell back in love with Bust a Move by Young MC, but that song is unbelievable, so I don’t feel guilty.
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
Dylan: Nothing rare, or valuable. 45s passed down from my Dad, mainly. Bronski Beat, Paul McCartney & Wings, Peter Sarstedt.
John: A Yusef Lateef album I picked off the street recently, the thrill is in the find!

What was the first record you bought that made you realise that you wanted to be a DJ / Producer?
The first pair of decks I bought were to scratch with rather than mix DJ. So I’d say hearing tapes of DJ Cheese’s 1986 DMC winning set got me wanting to buy decks.
The first records I bought that allowed me to realize I could try making music myself were things like Baby Ford “Oochy Koochy” or A Guy Called Gerald “Voodoo Ray”. Seeing young British guys make the music I loved and having an idea of what equipment they used opened up the idea that you could do it yourself.
What record makes you most nostalgic?
My Summer of 89 started in Ibiza in May and ended in a field somewhere round the M25 in September – great days. Hearing “APT 2B” from Rheji Burrell’s NY House’n Authority EP (see below) still takes me back to late night/early mornings somewhere in the home counties as the sun comes up.
What is your favourite end of night record?
This changes all the time, it’s always one that as soon as you hear it you want to go and hug everyone you see. I love to play “Our lives are shaped by what we love” by Odyssey – a beautiful record.
Do you have a guilty pleasure record?
I’d say I don’t believe in Guilty Pleasures, there are just Pleasures. But then again I do like a bit of George Michael – the chorus to Outside gets me every time, if i am at a wedding and this comes on, make room!
What is your most treasured piece of vinyl?
I’ve never been a big one for hunting rare or expensive records, but some things I bought when they came out years back now seem to be going for a few quid. The most treasured records I have would be “The Grunt” by the JBs on KIng 7″ a filthy dirty funky record and sampled in some really important Hip Hop tracks. The Apartments EP by NY House’n Authority is an amazing EP every track is brilliant and reminds me of warehouses. fields, and clubs in 1989. Fingers Inc “A love of my own” from 87 – a deep, deep, yet driving house track with lovely vocals. Perfection.

A prominent figure on the re-edits scene his re-work of Neneh Cherry’s‘Buffalo Stance’ was one of the biggest re-edits of 2013 receiving the ultimate ‘thumbs up’ from Mr Re-Edit himself Greg Wilson. A few words from Henry…
This was simultaneously the most fun and the hardest thing to do! I decided to go with the honest approach. I’ll probably live to regret it, but when I was 9, I was into pop music, and that ‘s how I’ve started the mix – If you stick with it past the early guilty pleasures (i.e. ace pop tunes) I’ll be really grateful!
The mix ended up quite organically in three sections. It kicks off with tunes I loved growing up, gradually moving into a house party/bar residency/studenty theme. The second section moves into 4/4 territory, and the third section has a kind of after-hours vibe. There are a few pop culture references sprinkled throughout for you as well if you like that sort of thing.
This is a pretty good snapshot, but couldn’t be definitive – it was so hard to keep it to around 90 minutes! There was a whole 2-step/rave/DnB section that hit the cutting room floor, and there’s very little disco as the two Roller Disco mixes I’ve done kind of have that covered. It was a really personal thing to do actually, I relived some really nice memories and hopefully it explains some of the bits and bobs I come up with. Thanks to Ste and Terser for the opportunity to self-indulge!
